Frequently asked questions
Choose a topic from below to find answers for your questions.
- Is an alarm system only for prevention of break and enters?
Absolutely not! With the proper components, your system can alert you to rising water levels in your basement, a sudden drop in the temperature in your home, dangerous carbon monoxide levels or possible fire – all of which can happen when you are not home. Melhoff Security is there 24/7, monitoring the safety of your home and your loved ones.
- What if I subscribe to an alternative phone service?
There is a possibility that we may not be able to monitor your security system. It is important that you contact us before you change your existing phone provider to verify if it will affect your security system.
- I don't have a landline in my home as I use my cell; Can I still have a monitored alarm system?
Yes! You will need to install a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) transmitter unit that will transmit the alarm signals over the GSM network to the Guardian monitoring centre.
- What if my phone line is compromised?
Most alarm systems use traditional telephone lines (or land lines) to transmit signals to monitoring centres. Melhoff Security recommends having a wireless backup connection installed with your alarm system. If your telephone line is compromised, the signal from your alarm can be carried by either a radio or cellular signal to the Melhoff Security monitoring centre.
- Can I get a discount on my homeowners insurance by installing a monitored security system?
Yes. Your Melhoff home security system may save you up to 15% on your homeowners’ insurance. Ask your insurance agent for details.
- Am I responsible for testing my own security system? How often?
Yes. It is important to test your system on a regular basis; our recommendation is once a month or at the minimum once every three months. Call the monitoring centre with your System ID and password before running your test and afterwards to confirm your test was a success. Instructions on testing your system are found in your complete user guide or call the Guardian Customer Care department.
